Re: Chess - General Thread

These cheating scandals have given chess tremendous publicity. All major news sites covered this latest scandal, in addition to Trevor Noah etc... But this makes me nervous about the future of chess (at least online chess tournaments). Apparently, a few of Niemann's past games got 100 percent correl...

Re: 36th National Games - Gujarat

The para TT medal winners were from Gujarat Right now the India cricket team has quite a few from Gujarat. Captain Pandya, Sir Jadeja, Pujara and so on. Even Bumrah represents Gujarat. They also have the largest cricket stadium in the world where an ex-US president was felicitated. Also Harmeet Des...

Re: World Chess Olympiad/ World Team Chess

Gukesh and Sarin both got gold as best performers on Board 1 and 2 respectively. Not sure if that has ever happened before. We got 7 individual medals of all colors: https://olympics.com/en/news/fide-chess-olympiad-2022-india-medal-tally-women-team-bronze Of most significance, we got the Gaprindashv...

Great observation, though I did not find that info in the main link:

Re: Commonwealth Games, 2022

Medals by state. I try hard to avoid state-by-state comparisons, but had to praise the Haryana/Punjab/Delhi region this time. Some of these athletes are probably born in other states to those they now reside in and represent. https://thebridge.in/commonwealth-games/state-wise-medal-list-cwg-2022-pun...

Re: Commonwealth Games, 2022

Not sure about the potential of the guy he beat but based on his results against the top Indians (and Loh), he should be moving up unless he is one of strange patriotic players (like LP or Sharath Kamal) who plays really well for country but dont do as well on the regular tour. Just checked, and Ng...

Re: Commonwealth Games, 2022

He is currently world #9, so your prediction has happened well before you made it. :D Makes sense, though sooner than I would expect! Which site do you check for live? This one has Yong at world rank 42 as of August 2: https://bwfworldtour.bwfbadminton.com/rankings/?id=9&cat_id=57&ryear=202...

Re: Commonwealth Games, 2022

Just saw the Lakshya Sen replay badminton highlights of the final set and it was superb. The guy Sen beat will probably soon become a World top 10 player. Sen himself is very impressive and is the clear Indian male number 1 now. Anyone know where Sen threw his racket at the end? Seemed like it went ...

Re: Commonwealth Games, 2022

My Summary We led all countries in wrestling, weight lifting, table tennis and badminton. In boxing, we came second to Ireland, but tied them in total medal count. I am a big optimist about Indian sports progression, but in this case I can only see a decline from this peak (the 5 sport total) next ...

Re: Commonwealth Games, 2022

My favorite moment of these Olympics is Avinash Sable. Followed by the other track and field medalists. Mr. Sable would have overtaken the final of the three Kenyans if the race was 5 meters longer. Note that Avinash also decided to enter the CWG 5000m race (shortly after his 3000m steeplechase), wh...

Re: Commonwealth Games, 2022

What an achievement by the triple jumpers. Was too early for me to watch in time:-( Hope this can translate into Olympics medals.

Decent performance from the women's 4x100 to come into 5th place.

Young Malaysian badminton guy looks very under-ranked. Sen will have a fight on his hands in the final.

Re: Commonwealth Games, 2022

Great visual of all the past Kenyan flags save one! The original video is even better as it had the section of the race where there were three Kenyans ahead of Mr. Sable (and the commenter assumed those same three would take the medals).

Re: Commonwealth Games, 2022

New Zealand and Scotland who are ranked above us in total medals won a combined 50 medals in swimming + cycling. England got 44 in those two sports combined. Australia got 81 . Insane. Without those two sports, we are close to a level where we would be number 1 going forward...even with no shooting ...

Re: Commonwealth Games, 2022

Avinash Sable's time of 8:11.20 would have been a Bronze at the last Olympics: https://olympics.com/en/olympic-games/tokyo-2020/results/athletics/men-s-3000m-steeplechase @Orang it is not the 100m. Absolute times matter but it is a very tactical race. For example, the Japanese who finished 7th in t...
