Re: Yuki Bhambri

I hope he finds a way to play at Surbiton (before the rush of players coming to play the grass Challengers). Because there is just one grass Challenger in each week prior to Wimbledon, they are always very tough fields. Surbiton is during the second week of the French Open, so it is always worth try...

Anirban's second child was born yesterday, and he has tweeted that he is looking forward to playing the PGA Championship :-)

Re: Yuki Bhambri

I hope Yuki is planning to play singles in some grass Challengers -- hopefully starting as early as next week. He really should give himself more of a chance in the Wimbledon qualifiers!

Re: French Open 2022

Ramkumar is the fittest of the players we have had in the past decade (since Somdev's retirement, that is), and that is reflected in the results here. I hope he qualifies into the main draw, and can finally start capitalizing on that fitness. This is a golden opportunity, similar to the chance he ha...

Re: French Open 2022

Sumit has had a stop-start return from the hip surgery -- and a comeback that just began 3 weeks ago. It would have been impossible for him to give his best here. Such a pity that he has missed the main part of the clay season this year too.

Re: Santosh Trophy

What is true of the arid regions of the US isn't necessarily true of Bengal -- a region soaking in water. The modest amount of water diverted by the Farakka Barrage isn't going to dry up Bangladesh, and has done nothing of the sort in the intervening years (despite Ritwik Ghatak's ridiculously tragi...

Atithee wrote: Tue May 17, 2022 7:53 am Why is 1983 World Cup cricket win not listed by either Rajit or PKB?
Because it was the first item mentioned in the post that started this thread. There can be little doubt about the massive significance of that win, both as a sports achievement and a transformative cultural event.

1928, 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1964 - gold medals in hockey. 1980 gold had an asterisk attached. 1951 - Asiad gold in football. (Sailen Manna, S Mewalal, Chandan Singh were the stars; Iran won silver, Japan bronze :-) ). 1958 - Wilson Jones wins world (amateur) billiards championship. He also w...

Re: French Open 2022

What is his record when he was fit at the FO? I think the odds are overwhelming that he would not have made it into the main draw even if he played a few matches. Clay is also gruelling in that the rallies are much longer. His body was perhaps not ready. I think he did the right thing. Yuki tells h...

Aditi seems to specialize in doing her best in the Olympics, then just drifts along on the pro tour. I suspect she needs a coach or companion to help her focus more on pro tournaments.

Re: French Open 2022

What a fabulous victory over the 9th seed in the qualifiers, which opens up a pretty steady path to the main draw, as his next opponent beat a fellow-wild card to make Q2: [Q1] Ramkumar Ramanathan (IND,178) d. 9-Yannik Hanfmann (GER,114) 63 62 which brings up: [Q2] Ramkumar Ramanathan (IND, 178) vs....

[Q1] PR-Yuki Bhambri (IND,624) l. Altug Celigbilek (TUR,183) 36 57

He had his chances in the second set, but couldn't capitalize. It was really ludicrous for him to go into the FO qualies without a clay-court singles match under his belt.

Re: BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals

What an absolutely stunning achievement :notworthy: :notworthy:  . The farthest we had ever reached in the Thomas Cup was the semifinal in 1979, when Prakash was approaching his prime and a young Syed Modi was emerging. But then we lost the doubles in most rounds (with Prakash usually teaming...
