Re: T20 World Cup, W.Indies/USA 2024

Strange decision to pick 4 spinners and just 3 specialist fast bowlers. Hardik Pandya has been hopeless with bat and ball in this year's IPL, but he still remains vice captain -- implying that he will be expected to play every match. Interesting decision to drop KL Rahul, who was the key culprit in ...

Re: Sumit Nagal thread

Taking five weeks off in the middle of the clay season is completely bizarre for a clay specialist like Sumit. There must be some injury issue involved, otherwise this makes absolutely no sense. A real pity!

Re: Indian Premier League (IPL)

I'm amazed that CSK is still doing what proved disastrous for India at the 2009 T20I World Cup. I can never forget landing at Heathrow full of confidence that India would easily chase down the England total, and being frustrated throughout my journey in to London on the black cab, as Jadeja's slow s...

Re: FIDE Candidates 2024

Congrats to Gukesh. We are a true global powerhouse of Chess now. I remember how much of a struggle it was for Manuel Aaron, and a slow stream of others, to gain the International Master designation. Only in 1988 did we have our first Indian Grandmaster, Vishy Anand, followed three years later by Di...

(Sorry for the crass joke, but couldn't resist)
Heck, Freudian slip :p

Jay, will you be so kind as to change it to "Slam title winners"?

Re: Indian Premier League (IPL)

Yashaswi Jaiswal calmed some nerves with a fine 104* off 60 balls against the hapless Pandya-led MI. The latter is in terrible form with bat, ball and as captain. The move from GT to MI was a disaster for him, and he surely doesn't merit a place in the squad for the T20 World Cup on current form. Th...

Re: Manas Dhamne thread

[R1] Q- Manas Dhamne (IND, 1342) d. Maximilian Figl (ITA, 1471) 62 36 75 A typical claycourt humdinger lasting 3 hours and 21 minutes. Manas was down a break in the final set, then came back to take a 5-4 lead, had 6 MPs on his opponent's next two service games, and eventually won on the 7th one. He...

Yes, it seemed inevitable although he was still playing very well. His father hinted at it when I ran into him a couple of months ago. Undoubtedly India's greatest male squash player to-date.

Ankita is in complete meltdown since her wedding, sadly. She needs to regroup, take a bit of time off and come back stronger.

Re: Roland Garros Claycourt Run-Up Tournaments 2024

Sumit-Yuki wouldn't be an ideal pairing, as neither of them has a particularly strong serve. I would say the potential pairings are RB-Yuki (strongest), RB-Sumit, RB-RamK, RB-Balaji. If RB choses to pair with Yuki, other doubles pairings would be RamK-Sumit (potentially quite good, complementing Sum...

Yuki Bhambri (partnering Albano Olivetti) got a good win in R1 of the Bavarian International (ATP250 in Munich), beating the champions of the Monte Carlo Masters last week, and finalists at last year's French Open, Vliegen/Gille (both Belgians).

Re: Leander Paes thread...

Leander Paes keeps getting better at golf. I see him often on the course when I am in Kolkata (approximately once a month). Last week, he won the monthly Silver Salver tournament at Tollygunge Club with the best gross score. (He didn't win the net score award, which was won by a 15-handicap golfer; ...
